The Abilene Bombers will play seven home games in the Lone Star Football League's regular season this year, beginning with the season opener against the San Angelo Bandits on March 9 at the Taylor County Coliseum.
The Bombers also play home games against the Laredo Rattlesnakes (March 16), Amarillo Venom (April 6), New Mexico Stars (April 13), Bandits (April 20), Venom (May 27) and Bandits (June 22). All are 7:05 p.m. Saturday games, except the May 27 game, which is on Monday (Memorial Day) and starts at 6:05 p.m.
Overall, Abilene will play a 13-game schedule. The June 22 game against the Bandits is the regular-season finale.
Amarillo is the defending LSFL champion. The Venom beat Rio Grande Valley 62-40 in the title game.
Abilene was 4-8 last year and missed the playoffs on the final day of the regular season. The Bombers were known as the Ruff Riders the previous six years and kept the name when they moved to Abilene in 2009. They changed their nickname to Bombers during the offseason.
This will be the Bandits first season, while the Stars will play their first season in the LSFL after playing their inaugural season in the Indoor Football League last season — going 2-12. The Stars play at the Santa Ana Star Center in Rio Rancho, N.M, just outside of Albuquerque.
The LSFL will have its league meetings this weekend in San Antonio, and, in a release, league officials said the league will discuss further expansion for 2014. Even with the additions of San Angelo and New Mexico, the league has only five teams. Rio Grande, West Texas and Corpus Christi no longer are in the league, while the Houston Stallions folded during the season last year.
